My creditors want a reference number - what is this?

If you tell your creditors (the people you owe money to) that you have had advice about your debts, they may ask you for a reference number from the organisation you’ve had advice from. Some creditors do this to check you have had proper advice.

My Money Steps will not give you a reference number because it is a confidential service, for people to use to use themselves. We do not deal with your creditors or give them any information about you.  If a creditor has asked you for a reference number, tell them that you are dealing with your debts yourself, and that you are using My Money Steps to help you do this. If you are having problems with a creditor, you can always speak to an adviser for more advice.
